The consecrated Bishops' Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, which gathered in Kyiv on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the enthronement of His Holiness Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus'-Ukraine, carefully considered and reflected on the events that occurred in the Ukrainian Church during the inter-conciliar period. As a summary of its work, the Council states the following. I. Unity of the Church, autocephaly, national question. 1. From the very beginning, the Church was formed by the Lord Jesus Christ, as a single whole, as His Body, in which He is the Head, and all the faithful are members. Just as the Lord Jesus Christ is one and only, so His Church can only be one and only. This is a dogmatic truth that is based on the words of Holy Scripture and reflected in the Creed. However, this unity not only does not imply the merging of all members of the Church into one whole, but on the contrary – it affirms unity precisely on the basis of diversity. “As You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be one in Us… that they may be one, as We are one; I in them, and You in Me; that they may be perfected in unity” (John 17:21-23) – the Savior prays to His Heavenly Father. From these words we learn that the unity of the Church is in the image of the unity of the Holy Trinity – unity in nature and diversity in hypostases (persons). And if in the Holy Trinity there are only three Divine Persons, then the Church, in the image of the Trinity, contains within itself a multitude of people who believe in Jesus Christ, living and dead. In Christ and through Christ, all believers constitute the one Body of the Church, but at the same time they do not lose their individuality and uniqueness.
